Unless you intend to go out and rent a private island, Christmas vacations on an island need not break the bank. The rules for traveling remain the same as they'd be for any other destination. Research the best places to stay ahead of time. Book tickets and make reservations months in advance. Ask for better rates when you can. It is doable. You just have to prepare well enough for it.
